Ahoy there baseball fans! Get ready to set sail along the banks of the Ohio River and dive into the story of Great American Ball Park, home of the Cincinnati Reds. It’s been a staple of the riverfront since 2003, but before that, the area was dominated by Riverfront Stadium, a circular multi-purpose arena for the Reds and Bengals. But in the 90s, single-use stadiums were all the rage and the Hamilton County voters approved a bond to build new stadiums for both teams. In the end, the citizens voted to build the new Reds ballpark along the riverfront, and after a little bit of demolition magic, Great American Ball Park was born, named after Great American Insurance who bought the naming rights for $75 million.
Walking along Second Street, fans are greeted by a three-story building with the legendary phrase “Rounding third and heading for home,” by Joe Nuxhall. The Crosley Terrace entrance is a grassy, tree-lined oasis with statues of Crosley Field-era players and a pitcher’s mound fit for Major League Baseball. Connected to the park is the Reds Hall of Fame Museum and team store, as well as a rose garden honoring Pete Rose, a personal favorite player for us.
Stepping inside the park, fans are treated to sweeping views of the 42,271 red seats in three levels. From the lower grandstand to the upper deck broken into two sections with an opening for a downtown Cincinnati view, there’s little foul territory so fans can catch every play. The left field boasts a massive video/scoreboard and a clock that’s a replica of the Crosley Field clock. The bullpens are located in the left-center and right field, and there’s a brewpub in the left-field corner for some refreshments. The right field features a 64-foot high homerun feature with smokestacks, a paddle wheel, and a misting system for added entertainment. The newest addition to the park is the right field video board.
So come on down to Great American Ball Park for a taste of new and classic ballpark vibes. It’s a true celebration of America’s favorite pastime!
