Ladies and Gentlemen, get ready to have your minds blown with a feast for the eyes – it’s time to talk about the Cincinnati Art Museum! Nestled in the Eden Park neighborhood of Cincinnati, Ohio, this museum is the real deal – founded way back in 1881, it was the first art museum to be purpose-built west of the Alleghenies. That’s right, this museum was ahead of its time, even before Google Maps was a thing!
With a collection of over 67,000 works spanning 6,000 years of human history, the Cincinnati Art Museum is one of the most comprehensive collections in the Midwest. And let’s not forget that it’s one of the oldest art museums in the United States, so you know it’s packed with some serious history.
But the journey to get the Cincinnati Art Museum to where it is today was no easy feat. Museum founders were faced with the tough decision of where to locate the museum – Burnet Woods, Eden Park, or downtown Cincinnati on Washington Park were all on the table. But in the end, it was Charles West who cast the deciding vote in favor of Eden Park. And we’re glad he did – can you imagine this museum being located anywhere else?
The museum building itself is a work of art, with a Romanesque-revival design by Cincinnati architect James W. McLaughlin that opened in 1886. And just like a fine wine, the museum has only gotten better with age – several additions and renovations have transformed the building into the stunning masterpiece it is today.
In 2003, the museum added a major addition – The Cincinnati Wing. This wing was created to house a permanent exhibit of art created for Cincinnati or by Cincinnati artists since 1788, and let’s just say, it does not disappoint. With fifteen new galleries covering 18,000 square feet of space and 400 objects on display, you’ll be in awe of the talent and creativity that’s come out of Cincinnati.
And last but not least, the Odoardo Fantacchiotti angels are two of the largest pieces in the museum’s collection, and they are not to be missed. These stunning works of art are a testament to the skill and beauty that the Cincinnati Art Museum has to offer.
So what are you waiting for? Grab your museum-walking shoes and head on over to the Cincinnati Art Museum – where art meets history, and beauty meets wonder! Check out the next destination here.
